Dixie Melody Boys – A Seat in the Heavenly Choir

Producer: Jason Clark
Label:
Seraphim Music Group
Website: www.dixiemelodyboys.com

The Dixie Melody Boys is a name that has been around for well over 40 years. Known for their rich history in excellence in quartet singing, “A Seat in the Heavenly Choir” offers up some of their finest performances by the group to date.

With classic quartet flare, the groups tears into the energetic, “I'M GOING UP”, before slowing down a bit for the acoustically soothing country sounds of, “SWEET BY AND BY”.

Harold Reid turns in a strong performance on the power ballad, “CRY FROM THE CROSS” before the group kicks it back into high gear with “I'VE GOTTA CLOUD”, from whence this recording derives its title.

The medium tempo, “JESUS PILOTS MY SHIP” features the very capable baritone turned lead singer, Dustin Sweatman, and is a highlight of the recording for me, as is “GOD'S STILL GOD”. Though musically, both songs are the typical sounding medium tempo Southern Gospel songs, they're both still are great songs.

Other songs include the uptempo, “I'M GONNA STAND”, as well as “SPRINGTIME IN HEAVEN”, which features Ed O'Neal, “HE'S COMING IN THE CLOUDS” and the Rodney Griffin penned tune “ANCHOR OF HOPE”.

The Dixie Melody Boys has always been riddled with numerous personnel changes, but Ed O'Neal has always managed to keep a solid sounding quartet, and things are no different here. In fact, this is the best I've heard them in recent years. My only issue on this particular recording is that when Ed takes a bass lead, he sounds very muffled and doesn't sound nearly as bright and clear when compared to the rest of the guys. It sounds like a technical issue rather than a vocal one, because I know O'Neal can still tote the mail very well!

Ed and the boys have always been ambassadors in the truest sense of the word when it comes to what classy Southern Gospel male quartet music should sound like and even with the recent changes in the group, I can't help but be assured that Ed still has a top-notch group.

Personal Favs: I'M GOING UP; SWEET BY AND BY; I'VE GOTTA CLOUD; JESUS PILOTS MY SHIP; GOD'S STILL GOD

The Dixie Melody Boys have always been one of the industries most exciting groups. Ed O'Neal knows how to assemble a group of young men and train them how to be a great quartet.

Thanks DMB for including my song, I'm Going Up. You guys did a great job and did it right.

    Keep up the good work.

    Gary O'Neal

Years ago when my Mother was still living The Dixie Melody Boys was having a consert in Kinston Eds hometown, And it was my Mothers Birthday and she just loved them and wanted to go hear them, but didn't have a way to go so Ed told his piano player to go pick her up and bring her in the back door. Needless to say he made her day. We were living in Alexandria Va. then. I will never forget that as long as I live. What a wonderful man. Thanks again for making my Mother's so happy.
