Master’s Voice - Aug 2004

Life on the road can certainly seem taxing at times. It isn't easy being away from your family, friends or church home, but the Lord sustains us.

Undoubtedly, one of the ways that keep the "road life" not so grueling is all the opportunities to laugh at one another. I have the privelege of traveling with two of the funniest human beings on Earth. They are both ministers in the most purest form, but both of them keep me rolling non-stop. It is mostly at my expense it seems which doesn't bother me. I wonder what that says about my sad little person? Anyway, I thought it would be funny to share some things that happen to us on the road that is eventually funny:

Not long ago, Master's Voice was singing outside at a place that was too quaint and narrow to fit the bus in, so we all showed up in separate cars.

I was the first one to arrive, so being the minister that I am (cough), I went to see what this place was all about. I met the guy who was apparently in charge. He stood about 6'4'', dressed in all black with jet black hair (possibly related to Johnny Cash?) I went up to him and introducec myself.

"Good evening sir! My name is Ricky." He shook my hand and said "Dicky?"

I corrected him and said again, "Ricky." Well, he repeated it again, "Dicky." I chuckled, thinking he was teasing me, but still unsure, I clarified with the proverbial chest pat...."Ricky." He was a persistent kidder as he said it again, "Dicky." This time, just to make sure, I said "Rick...with an R." This time, he just looked at me with a half-scowl, and then there was this awkward silence that seemed like it lasted for a while.

We both sort of started looking around....up towards the sky....down to the ground and kind of wondered off from each other. I was confused completely.

He through me for a loop. I thought..."can the guy not say "Ricky?" Is somethign wrong with his speech? Hoping I didn't embarrass him, I went and stood at our table and waited for the other guys to show up. Just as I did that, the sound engineer was checking the microphones from stage. "Check 1...check 2." Then it happened. The sound engineer asked, "hey, Dicky, does that sound ok?" That was the guy's name. The Johnny Cash fella's name was Dicky! He must have thought I was a complete goober. I was just glad we walked away from each other before I spelled my whole name to him...or before I got out flashcards. Needless to say, I tried to avoid him for a while, but he was a real class act about it....he didn't make us leave or anything. When I told the boys what happened, oddly they didn't seemed surprised, but I have since been sanctioned to not meet the "in-charge" guy by myself, ha!

July was a busy month even if our schedule didn't suggest that. We had youth camps, Steve Hurst School, and we had to deal with the newly-weds! By the way, Jess and John are doing great. They are cuter than a dalmation puppy in a little red wagon.
Our CD is done! It is finished! "By Request," is now available, so get in touch with us if you need one, and yes, we are already gathering songs for our next project.

Lastly, I want to thank the Unthanks for having us once again at the SoGospelNews Convention. It was a blast as always. It was a full house, and we look forward to next year! We love you all!

That is too funny, Ricky. That would only have happened to you. Save me a CD...I won't be able to make it to the Block Party, I have to work. Hopefully, I will see you all soon. God Bless you all.
