Stories Behind The Songs - “He Will Roll You Over the Tide” by Kyla Rowland

(Kyla's First Song)

(Written in Kyla's own words)
My brother Ron was very rebellious and left home when he was 15 years old. My mother had to wait 20 years before Ron finally came back to the Lord. Mama stood steadfast in the Lord that God would restore her son back to her. A lot of people said he'll never amount to anything or they said 'that poor little thing thinks that her son is going to preach or something.' About a year before Ron really dedicated his life to the Lord, I really got worried about him. I was praying and praying for Ron and it just like I was praying to a wall. I could not pray through. Well, this went on for about a year, and I never did think he was going to make it right, and I thought mother is going to die before she ever sees him surrender to the Lord.

I never will forget one night I was up all night carrying this burden for my brother. I was so tired of it, and I just wanted it to be gone. I got up the next morning and looked outside and said 'Lord, it's so sunny in your world, how can it be so dark in my heart?' I didn't hear a voice, but heard something in my heart. I went over to the piano and I started writing"When Stephen was accused" Well, I started crying and thought, well what in the world am I doing? And then I got to the chorus"I've never had a prayer that He couldn't answer" Well honey by then my hair was standing up and it was all I could do sit there and try to get it written. Then I wrote, "I've never shed a tear that He could not dry. And when the waves of life are so high you can't mount, He will roll you over the tide." By the time I got to the end of that chorus, I couldn't sit there anymore and I had to get up and I ran around the house just shouting, jumping. Then I came back and wrote the second verse.

That certainly is a great song and it was recorded so well by the Inspirations way back in the late 70s.

We have had a family singing group all of our lifes. And we have been blessed and have blessed so many with this song. You know God anotinted you with this song. It has always been a blessing and even today in 2006 you can still feel the power of God when you sing or hear this song. Thank you for your talent. And I bet your brother is still saved. Sometimes we have to wait for the Lords time.
    Sincerily,
    Nell
