Mended Wings - We Have a History

Producer: Phil Cross/Rick Salyer/Mended Wings
Label:
Sonlite Records

Mended Wings has been around for about 8 years and they have made great strides to further the cause of Southern Gospel Music. Though they have encountered a few changes, as evidenced with this recording, they come through with a good, strong sound. Consisting of Rodney Hoots singing tenor, Scott Jacobs on lead, and baritone Phil Robinson, the group has gelled into a very solid group. I do miss the sound with a bass singer, but for what the group has to offer right now, they sound great!

Kicking the recording off is their current single entitled, "FATHER'S RIGHTEOUS HAND" , written by Phil Cross, followed by the infectious "THE LIVING WORD", written in part by Daryl Williams.

The classic hymn "GOD LEADS HIS CHILDREN ALONG" is next, and the guys do a little different arrangement on the song as it follows a more inspirational approach. Picking up the pace, we come to the unique song "THROWING STONES". Using Paul's letter to the church and the story about the woman who was to be stoned for her sinful act, the song says, "some claim to be on the Rock, but they're busy throwing stones…" A lot of people could learn a great lesson with this song.

"JESUS LOVES YOU" is a simple, yet profound song written by Scott and Phillip. This is the hearts cry of anyone who ministers, be it singer, songwriter, preacher or whatever …"if you only hear one thing we say, it's Jesus loves you!" Scott and Phillip also penned the title song, "I HAVE A HISTORY", which has an old-timey jazz sound to it and it's a great, fun song.

In typical Southern Gospel flare, the group dives into "WHAT A FRIEND HE IS TO ME". Traditional Southern Gospel fans will really enjoy this one. Slowing things down a bit is a song written by Scott and Phil Cross called "PRINCE OF PEACE", and it features Cross' signature sound.

"RUN ON" is a really cool song that, up until recently, had been all but forgotten. In the last few years, several groups have revived this song, and Mended Wings has done a super job with their rendition.

Closing out the recording is a reflective number entitled "IF I COULD", that recall the times you wish you could go back and change, if only you could.

The group has a strong Southern Gospel sound with some Inspirational connotations. The songs are very strong and I found some are quite practical in nature. The tracks are very good, with the exception of the first song where I found the orchestrations a little less than adequate, but beyond that, this still proves to be a very strong recording and definitely a notch above the average recording coming out these days.

Personal Favs: THE LIVING WORD; THROWING STONES; JESUS LOVES YOU; I HAVE A HISTORY; WHAT A FRIEND HE IS TO ME; RUN ON

Mended Wings has a way of reaching out and touching your soul with their songs. You can feel the presence of God in the room when they sing. Rodney, Scott and Phil are truly men of God and are following His call on their lives. In this album, We Have a History, no matter what place you are in your life, each song can minister to you. My favorites are Jesus Loves You, Prince of Peace and If I Could because of the impact the words have on your heart. They let you know how much God loves you and no matter what, His mercy can heal and restore.

I'm not sure how many stars I would give this, but it does have a lot more going for it than many of the releases I've heard the last few months. Musically, lyrically, and vocally above the average.
