Zion News - Jun 2004

"You are almost through the storm!" Those words spoke such peace to our hearts as we flew back to Nashville from Destin, FL. We had been in Destin over the Memorial Day weekend enjoying some fun in the sun. My husband (and pilot) flew us to Florida in our small plane. We also took our niece and nephew, Megan and Myles.

Prior to leaving Destin, my husband had warned us that the flight would be about an hour longer than usual because we were going to fly out of the way to get around some storms. So we settled in for a long flight. Within minutes I felt that this would not be an ordinary flight. As they vectored us around some of the clouds, I grew more anxious. Before long we were head long in the middle of a huge storm. No matter what window of the plane you looked out ....all that we could see was storm clouds, lightening and rain. The rain seemed to be hitting the plane with such force that it sounded like hail. The winds were beating the plane with such intensity that my husband could not hit the buttons on the control panel. The further we flew the darker the clouds got until it looked as if it were night but it was 3:00 in the afternoon.

Fear gripped my heart as I considered that this truly could be the end. I had confidence that Kevin would do his job well; I just didn’t know if it would be enough to get us through the storm. I prayed fervently for our safety, for angels to surround our plane and keep us from harm....but the prayer that I vividly remember in the midst of all of that chaos was for God to simply calm the storm. I prayed that prayer over and over! Occasionally looking over my shoulder to the two bravest children I have ever known...I would muster up a smile and a thumbs up and tell them that everything was fine. Little did I know, but they had shared their own prayer in that storm when they became fearful of the outcome!

After about 40 minutes in the storm tossed plane, I heard my husband ask in anxious tones for assistance to get us out of the storm and on the ground. They sent us to another controller and the first words of that controller were.... "Sir, you are almost through the storm!" He was looking at the radar and knew that we had been in level 4 and 5 storms and knew that we were desperate! His calm voice and gentle tones were reassuring. He directed us into level 2 storms and finally into blue sky once again.

We have given God thanks ever since this experience because we truly feel that it is a miracle that we survived that storm! As I reflect back on this day, I understand that some storms in our life are not so literal. They are losses, deaths, health issues, family problems and other circumstances that bring us pain. These problems can toss us around, cause fear to grip our hearts and may even prompt us to want to throw our hands up in despair. But I can just imagine an all-knowing God looking at our life and saying "Don’t give up now, you are almost through the storm!" We don’t know how long the storm will last but we do know who provides our strength to endure the storm!

I am so thankful for a God who knows our needs, who knows our desires and who can speak PEACE into any situation we face. So please, DON’T GIVE UP NOW!!! YOU ARE ALMOST THROUGH THE STORM!!
