Living In Gratitude

It’s always easy to overlook the basics.

So often, I’ve heard people say, “We should just be thankful to wake up in the morning.” It’s true, but how many of us actually practice that? We’re thankful for our homes, our families, and our jobs. Maybe we’re thankful for specific moments, like a wedding or a healing. But how many of us actually wake up each day and think, “I’m just grateful to be alive?”

As I wrote last month, on May 3rd, my husband, Gerald, and I were in a terrible car accident. It’s only through God’s amazing provision that we are both here to tell our story today. We’ve experienced many different emotions over the past few weeks, and for the first time ever, I have truly experienced the gratitude of being alive.

It’s different than other kinds of gratitude. It’s primal and deep. It makes you reassess everything in your life. The unimportant things become quite unimportant, while the important things become very, very important.

I would almost even say that this kind of gratitude is humbling. We all know life in general is fragile, but when the fragility of your own life is on the table, you realize just how blessed you are to simply be alive.

How has this changed things for me?

Well, it’s made me realize that trials aren’t such a trial anymore. I’m happy to be here so I can face them and learn from them. I want to spend lots of time with family and friends. I want to know them better, and love them more. And I am more committed than ever to serving God and His people. If God had wanted to take us home on May 3rd, He could have. For some reason, He chose to lift us from the wreckage (literally!) and send us back into His world. I don’t want to take a moment of this life for granted, and I want to make sure everyone I meet knows of God's amazing grace and love!

As you go about your day, I encourage you to be grateful for the blessings in your life, but I also encourage you to take a moment and think, “I’m so grateful to be alive!”

Many Blessings,

Allison Lynn
