Most people aren't really familiar with the production process. Explain how that works for you and how it may differ from other producers.
I’m very involved with the song selection process although there are those artists that really know great songs and what works for them. I secure the players, studios, engineers & arrangements. I like to push the envelope (probably to a fault from time to time) as I don’t care to be predictable. As far as production style , I try to promote a very positive atmosphere in the room as it encourages fun & creativity - these elements go to tape (or should I say harddrive?). I would assume that other producers have their own path to achieving these objectives as they’re putting out some great work.
How much input does the artist get during the production of a record when working with you?
I’m very “hands on.” I love great phrasing and tight harmonies, so I’m constantly trying to motivate the artist to give their very best. I dig deep. I’m hyper enough for all of us so when things are “happening,” there’s definitely an air of excitement in the room.
You have worked with artists in other genres of music as well as Southern Gospel. Does the process change when working with other companies, artists, and musicians?
Every artist, musician, company & genre are different. My general approach is similar whether working on something Southern Gospel, Contemporary, Pop, Country or Bluegrass. I like to get a mental picture of who the artist is, learn their personalities, plan a strategy and then strive to present them in the very best light possible.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a producer?
For me, one of the most rewarding things is seeing that “look in the eye” of an artist that is extremely surprised & pleased at what they just pulled off vocally, especially when they’ve done so with a great amount of emotion. Another biggie - it’s always rewarding to get a post or letter explaining how the product of our work has changed or affected someone’s life for the good.

Bob McKenzie, Tony Brown, Ron Chancey, Lari Goss, Brown Bannister, Gary Paxton, Joe Huffman, Rusty Goodman & last but not least . . . the Honorable, Doctor Reverend William Gaither
What artists or individuals have you enjoyed working with the most?
How much time to you have? Okay, the obvious answer would be folks like the Vocal Band, The Oak Ridge Boys, Michael English, Mark Lowry, Russ Taff, The Martins, Gold City, my wife (Tanya) and many others, but this seems like a golden opportunity to mention some up & coming artists out there who are extremely gifted as well and who I feel will make their mark. Aaron Minick is doing something unique with a Big Band approach. It’s off the beaten path, but musically very interesting and we evermore had a blast while working on his stuff. He’s hilarious!!!! The LeBeaus are doing some way cool stuff too. They’re a Father/Son duo from North Carolina, and they’re going the distance and beginning to make some real noise. With them, it’s a party from beginning to end. You’ll be hearing much more from Aaron Minick & the LeBeaus in the very near future.
What thing have you learned spiritually from sitting in the producer's chair?
Stay out of the way when God shows up.
What advice can you give to people who wish to work in the record business?
Study the work of the best, then surround yourself by the best. Develop your unique style. Learn the value of great songs - it all starts with a song. Believe in yourself, your gift and abilities, and see yourself as a winner. Steer clear of negativity.

Great article Michael. I really like your creative thinking. I admire your work very much. This article says one thing very special, all of it is great but the thing that sticks out to me the most is "steer clear of negativity".
