Sometimes it’s the simplest words that can touch our hearts the deepest. As the Easter season approaches churches are gearing up to give us great theatrical cantatas and choirs are practicing intricate song arrangements and pastors are preparing eloquent sermons. But, as I think back, my favorite memories of Easter are the simple ones.
I’ve heard many great sermons through the years, but none better than “It’s Friday, but Sunday’s Coming”. That simple, reoccurring phrase took me from the depths of Good Friday’s despair to the joy of Easter morning over and over again. And I’ve seen many performances of the “Passion Play” with live camels, flying angels and very realistic crucifixions, but what touched me the most was the simplest song with the simplest line—“remember me”. And I’ll never forget hearing Anthony Burger tell the story of his son playing Jesus in their church’s children’s musical. How proud he was. And then as his son was about to come out of the tomb, he yells out “ready or not, here I come”! What a profound thought…Ready or not, Jesus IS coming again!
I also have a new “favorite” Easter song called “Washing the Feet” sent to us by Marcia Henry and Chris Binion. It had one of those simple lines in it that made me stop and say, “Wow, I never thought of it that way before.” Now each time I hear the Easter story told starting with the Last Supper in the upper room, and I think of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet I will be reminded that He was…’Washing the feet, that would run away from Him.’ What a great thought!
As you celebrate Easter this year and relive the awesomeness of what God has done for us, take a moment to let the “simple” message of Easter touch your heart too.
